Search and Rescue K9 handlers dedicate their lives to aiding communities in times of crisis, and here at MYOS we are grateful to hear some stories that capture the dedication, resilience, and heart behind their work. We had the pleasure of speaking with Debbie R., a retired firefighter paramedic, whose journey into the world of search and rescue began serendipitously but has left a lasting impact on countless lives.
From Firefighting to Search and Rescue
Debbie’s introduction to search and rescue came during her time as a firefighter paramedic when she witnessed a dog working during a house demolition for a heavy duty rescue. The way the dog worked captivated her, sparking her passion for the field of search and rescue. At that time, the St. Louis area had only one SAR team, which she joined as a flanker, which she did for around two years. Around this time, Debbie got her first SAR dog, a yellow Labrador, in 2000.

Since then, Debbie has worked with a number of extraordinary dogs, each of whom has played a critical role in her SAR missions. One was a German shepherd, who Debbie worked with diligently for over a decade and he even assisted in the aftermath of the Joplin tornado. Along the way, she has had several other dogs, including black labs who have worked in live find, human remains detection (HRD), and tracking.
Today, Debbie continues her work with her current dogs. One of her black Labs, who is now 11 years old, remains active in HRD searches, proving that age is just a number with the right care and training. Her newest partner, Micah, is a two-and-a-half-year-old black Lab certified in HRD this past December, ready to carry on the legacy of service.
The Reward of SAR Work
When asked about the most rewarding part of SAR, Debbie’s answer is heartfelt: the opportunity to make a difference for families in times of trouble. Whether finding a missing person in a live-find mission or uncovering evidence in HRD cases, the knowledge that her dogs’ work can bring closure to families or aid law enforcement drives her dedication.
The Role of MYOS in Debbie's Dogs' Health
Debbie discovered MYOS Canine Muscle Formula over two years ago and has been incorporating it into her dogs’ diets ever since. For Gabe, her older dog, MYOS has been a game-changer, helping him maintain muscle strength and stay active in the field. While her younger dogs are naturally fit, she’s confident that MYOS is supporting their long-term health and performance.
A Legacy of Dedication
Debbie’s journey as a SAR K9 handler is a testament to the unbreakable bond between handler and dog, and the life-saving impact of their work. Her story is one of resilience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.
