Red, White & Woof: Fourth of July Pet Safety

The Fourth of July is a time for celebration, but for our pets, it can be a stressful and even dangerous day. From loud fireworks to tempting barbecue scraps, it's important to take a few precautions to keep both dogs and cats safe and happy during the festivities. Here’s how you can celebrate responsibly while making sure your four-legged family members enjoy the holiday too!

1. Keep Pets Indoors During Fireworks

Fireworks may be fun for humans, but the loud noises and flashing lights can cause anxiety in pets. Create a calm, cozy space inside your home with familiar blankets, toys, and even soft music to help drown out the noise that your pet can retreat to. Close windows and curtains to minimize the sound and flashes.

2. Watch the Grill and Party Food

Barbecue food might smell irresistible, but many common cookout items—like bones, onions, grapes, and chocolate—can be toxic to pets. Make sure your guests know not to feed table scraps to furry friends, and keep garbage and leftovers out of reach.

3. Update ID Tags and Microchips

In case your pet does slip out during the excitement, make sure they’re wearing a collar with up-to-date ID tags. If they’re microchipped, double-check that your contact info is current.

4. Provide Healthy Distractions

Give your dog or cat something fun (and safe) to focus on—like a puzzle toy, frozen treat, or a favorite chew. A lick mat with their favorite treat or MYOS Muscle Formula can give them a distraction and a muscle-boost at the same time! Also, staying active earlier in the day with a game of fetch or a long walk can also help reduce restlessness at night.

With a little preparation, the Fourth of July can be a safe and enjoyable experience for the whole family—including your fur babies. Here’s to a holiday filled with fireworks, freedom, and furry cuddles!
